Tips For Enjoying Summer In Palm Springs

Palm Springs gets hot in July and August, but there are still plenty of things to do in between relaxing and chilling out in your air-conditioned vacation rental. Here are some suggestions for getting the most out your vacation:

Rise and shine. If you want to walk, hike, or play golf or tennis, you will want to get up early. The sun is up around 6am and many people get up and out early to take advantage of the beautiful morning. The rising sun casts a red glow on the San Jacinto mountain and makes it gorgeous.

Swim in the morning and evening. Of course, the pool feels great in the middle of the day, but since the air temps and water temps are warm this time of year, mornings and evening swims feel wonderful. Pool hours at Palm Canyon Villas are 7am to midnight, so there is plenty of time to enjoy. (Of course, be considerate with the noise levels during early and late hours).

Plan cooler activities in the middle of the day. When the temperatures soar, it’s a good time to get into cooler places. The Palm Springs Tramway is generally 30 degrees cooler since it takes you up 8500 feet in elevation. You can easily spend half a day up there if you do a little hiking. For those that want to take it easier, you can enjoy lunch up there and take a nature walk through Long Valley. If you make it to Notch 3, you will be rewarded with amazing views of upper Tahquitz Canyon and the Coachella Valley. Other “cooler” activities include visiting the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Palm Springs Air Museum, a little gambling at the Spa Casino, or splash around at the Wet N Wild Water Park. Joshua Tree National Park is also a good option, though it will still be warm there. The earlier you go, the better, and the air-conditioned drive through the north end of the park is itself worth going. You can get out of the car and walk around to your own comfort level.

Enjoy Downtown Palm Springs in the evening. There are great shops and restaurants downtown, so you can sit down to a nice dinner then stroll down Palm Canyon Drive after. Many of the restaurants have misting systems to bring the outdoor temperatures down about 15 degrees, so it’s often very comfortable to sit out on a patio and enjoy the evening. After dinner, there are plenty of great places to get treats. Great Shakes is the best (trust me), but you can’t go wrong with some italian ice and custard from Vinny’s. There are also several ice cream places on Palm Canyon.

There are plenty of options, including the option of chilling out at the condo and enjoying a good book. Sleep in. Catch up on your crosswords. Palm Springs is all about relaxation. Enjoy!
