Desert X is a collections of art installations that pop up in Palm Springs and throughout the Coachella Valley every two years. The current run is happening now through April 21. All of the installations are free and open to the public, and many are located outdoors. This year there are 19 artists displaying their work. Many are sculptural, some are avant garde, and one uses your smart phone to create a fanciful augmented reality experience using your smart phone.
Start by downloading the Desert X smartphone app, or swing by the Ace Hotel for a printed guide to all the art. Both will give you GPS coordinates so you can find the installations on your own. You can also find out information about guided van tours on the Desert X website at www.desertx.org.
Also, check out this link to a good write-up of the project and some recommendations for the best ones to check out. LA Times Desert X
If you are staying in Palm Springs, you can do it casually and pick two or three a day to go see. Much of the art is in and around town, and even the ones out in the desert are only minutes from town. Some are further out, towards the Salton Sea. If you do that, also check out my list of other activities you can do in the High Desert and Salton Sea area. Click Here

Now that the Palm Springs weather is turning to what we call “cold”, it’s time for a little Christmas cheer in the desert. We have our downtown Parade of lights, which is fun for the kids, but one of our best attractions is so bright you can see it from the aerial tramway, or even from an airplane.
I guarantee you have never seen a Christmas display quite like Robolights. Artist Kenny Irwin has been building this installation of recycled art for over 35 years. Every year he adds dozens of new sculptures, so there is always something new to see. You will find Santa Claus and reindeer here, along with thousands of glistening lights, but this is not the usual Candy Cane Lane for the kids. There are some truly bizarre images mixed in among the merriment. Check out the video for a taste of what you have in store.
According to The Desert Sun newspaper, this will be the last year Robolights will be at this location, as the City of Palm Springs has mandated it be moved to a commercial space due to its popularity and size. Who knows what the future holds for Robolights, but it is highly recommended that you see it while you can.
